Acupuncture

What to expect:

At your first appointment please come 20 mins early to fill out the Health History Intake form and other necessary paperwork. To determine the type of acupuncture treatment that will help you the most, your practitioner may ask you many questions about your symptoms, behaviors and lifestyle. Dr. Amanda may also closely examine:

• The parts of your body that are painful
• The shape, coating and color of your tongue
• The color of your face
• The strength, rhythm and quality of the pulse in your wrist

This initial evaluation may take up to 90 minutes. Subsequent appointments usually take about 45 mins. We offer all first time patients a dual visit plan to best demonstrate how acupuncture therapy works best. New Patient Acupuncture appointments include an initial visit and a follow-up visit split over one week. We use these two visits as diagnostic tools to come up with an individual treatment plan to best suit your needs. Price includes both initial and follow up visits, as well as a report of findings and a recommended care plan. 

A common initial treatment plan for a single complaint would typically involve 6 - 24 treatments, scheduled over a specific time frame.

Acute conditions that are new typically require less visits, on average approximately 6-12. Chronic conditions that a patient has dealt with a long time will require frequent and consistent treatments usually in the range of 12-24 visits.  Dr. Amanda does offer special pricing options for patients that commit to a customized treatment care plan.

During acupuncture 
Acupuncture points are located in all areas of the body. Sometimes the appropriate points are far removed from the area of your pain. Your acupuncture practitioner will tell you the general location of the planned treatment and if articles of clothing need to be removed. If appropriate, a gown, towel or sheet will be provided to preserve your modesty. After you lie down on a padded table or are comfortably seated in a chair, the treatment begins.

• Needle insertion. Acupuncture needles are very thin, so insertion usually causes very little discomfort. Between five and 40 needles are used in a typical treatment. You may feel nothing at all once the needles are in. Some patients can feel the 'qi' or energy movement in the body once the needles are placed. This often feels like a warm, cold, or heavy sensation in the body.
• Needle retention & removal. In most cases, the needles will remain in place for 20 to 30 minutes while you lie still and relax or fall asleep. There is usually no sensation of discomfort when the needles are removed. Your acupuncture practitioner will discard the needles after removal.

After acupuncture 
Some people feel relaxed while others feel energized after an acupuncture treatment. Dr. Amanda will guide you with individualized post-care recommendations based on your condition.
